How To Care For African Fig Tree

Keep the African Fig Tree’s soil moist. It comes from the rainforest next to rivers and streams, so prefers a damp environment. Read out watering guide if you’re stuck!

Ficus Cyathistipula want a bright spot out of direct sunlight. It would usually be a shrub underneath the canopy of larger trees in the rainforest so wouldn’t be exposed to the full sun.

Hailing from the rainforest the African Fig Tree prefers a humid environment where possible but should be fine in normal room humidity. Treat to shower when watering or let it bask in the rain when the weathers are warmer.

A potting soil rich in organic matter will be best for the African Fig Tree. Fig trees require rich soil to use the nutrients for their fruit.

Fertilise biweekly in spring and summer with a weak dose of houseplant fertiliser, but do not feed during winter.

If using fertiliser is new to you, read our “How to Fertilise Your Houseplant” page!

The African fig tree is not especially prone to any pests or diseases. However, if you think your plant is suffering from a pest or disease, then our Pests and Infections page will help diagnose your problem!

You can repot your Ficus Cyathistipula annually to encourage new growth or every 2/3 years to restrict its growth. Check for roots protruding from the bottom of the pot and ensure the soil is dry before repotting to avoid damaging its roots.

Wondering how to repot your houseplant? Take a look at our repotting guide. It has all the information you’ll need!

About African Fig Tree

The African fig tree is one of the most vibrant showstopper house plants we have to offer!  African Fig Trees (Ficus Cyathistipula) are a member of the Mulberry family from the tropical rainforests of Africa.

The African fig tree can grow up to heights of 5 metres and this shrub-like fig tree grows red figs when ripe! That makes this large house plant the perfect addition to the bedroom, living room, or conservatory!

They generally grow beside streams or rivers in the forest where the environment is shaded, humid and water is plentiful. It is always worth bearing this in mind when locating your African Fig Tree at home. It is going to need a spot with bright, indirect sunlight.

When the figs fall from the trees, the thick skins enable them to float on water where they are carried downriver, because of this, they are commonly known as ‘the rivers gift’ in Kenya.

Is this product not for you? Not to worry! Take a look at our (almost) Unkillable plants and our Best Large Houseplants pages.
