How To Care For Snake Plant “Black Coral”

Don’t overwater. Too much water is the snake plant’s weakness. Place in a well-drained plant pot to avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Only water the soil when it’s completely dry.

Indirect sunlight is best. Partial sun works best for snake plants. Though, it can still grow in darker corners or in brighter window areas. If completely shaded, the plant can dull and the leaves may become a bit floppy.

Perhaps one of the most popular reasons people include snake plants in their decor is that they’re low maintenance, requiring little attention to grow. They’re resilient, hardy plants and can survive in relatively dry environments, both indoors and ou

Keep in well-draining, sandy soil. Avoid using peat-based compost and opt for a cactus based mix, if you’re looking for a ready-mixed potting medium.

Really not necessary but you can opt to use a weak cactus fertiliser during spring and summer. Don’t fertilise in winter.

If using fertiliser is new to you, read our “How to Fertilise Your Houseplant” page!

Snake plants shouldn’t really be affected by pests and diseases, but if you have an infestation already in the house, make sure you move it away and treat it with neem oil if necessary.

If you think your plant is suffering from a pest or disease, take a look at our Pests and Infections page!

Choose a sturdy pot when repotting and be gentle with the roots. You can easily propagate your snake plant by division when repotting. Make sure you use fresh, sandy compost when repotting your snake plant.
